Hospital Medical Emergency Teams (MET)

"The concept of Medical Emergency Teams (MET) has been explored as a method to identify patients at risk and intervene to prevent the development of cardiac arrest."

  • usually consist of a physician and critical care nurse
  • team is available at all times
  • team activated by other hospital staff based on specific criteria

Examples of interventions include recognition and treatment of airway, breathing, and circulation problems with oxygen, fluid/electrolytes, drugs, etc.

The studies that have been conducted on this system so far have been either supportive or neutral.

"Introduction of MET system for adult in-hospital patients should be considered."

  • team member selection
  • calling criteria
  • education and awareness of hospital staff
  • method of team activation
