Public access defibrillation (PAD) programs aim to make lifesaving CPR and defibrillation readily available to anyone who experiences sudden cardiac arrest.
It involves community involvement and collaboration to bring together key stakeholders in the effort. These key stakeholders may include EMS and the fire department, police, local hospitals, city government officials, and others who can influence decisions about AED procurement, placement and training throughout the community.
The ultimate goal of a Heart Safe Community is to save lives. That's why these communities implement AED programs, to maximize the chance of saving an SCA victim's life. This is accomplished by:
- Teaching people how to recognize cardiac emergencies early and to take action quickly.
- Enabling the first person on-scene to quickly administer defibrillation by having an AED nearby.
- Providing a fast and smooth transition through each step of the emergency medical care system.
