Oregon now requires AEDs in certain buildings and businesses
As of January 1, 2010, the state of Oregon requires that certain buildings and businesses must now have at least one automated external defibrillator (AED) on site as well as staff that are trained in the use of the AED and CPR. (ORS 30.802/ORS 431.680)
Buildings and businesses specifically affected by this law are those that are any place of public assembly with a facility of 50,000 square feet or more and with at least 25 individuals present on a normal business day. Businesses or public locations that are not mandated to comply with this legislation include facilities owned by a school district, education service district, private school, public charter school or any facility primarily used for worship or education associated with worship.
You could carry more risk without an AED on site than with one on site
In some cases, businesses have steered away from implementing an AED program due to risk of potential lawsuits concerning the use of an AED. The new Oregon legislation offers protection and specifically notes that a person may not bring a cause of action against the owner involving the use, attempted use, or non-use of an AED.
